The Philosophy of Racing

Throughout the book, philosophies taken from race car driving are presented parallel to Denny and Enzo’s daily life. Enzo dissects these lessons from racing intelligently and strategically, applying them to events that are happening around him. This serves multiple purposes in the narrative, but overall, it is clear that Stein uses these lessons to demonstrate how racing is a metaphor for life. For instance, racing advice is often used to offer some perspective on the volume of variables against which Denny has to contend with, both in his occupation as a driver and also in his home life. It also provides the reader a map of Denny’s internal thought processes by way of Enzo, who uses smart racing strategies as a cipher to understand and describe his master. For Enzo, racing lessons also provide context and solution to the challenges in the story. When Denny comes up against a complication in his marriage or is fighting lawsuits, Enzo uses these opportunities to reflect on how competent drivers deal with unexpected challenges on the track. Stein seems to draw the connection between life and racing as a way to show how going through life’s ups and downs is similar to navigating a car.
